Comparison between PLC Fiber Splitter and Fused Fiber Splitter

Fiber optic splitter is for decomposing an optical fiber signal into multi-channel optical signal and then output. Both PLC Fiber Splitter (PLC) and Fused Fiber Splitter (FBT) can do this optical splitting.  

Function of fiber optic splitter is: (1) when a main light source passes through the optical splitter, to divide the light into 1xN optical path; (2) the N optical path is converted into 1 main light source by means of a fiber splitter.

The working principle of fiber optic splitter is: when the single-mode optical fiber transmits signal transmission, light energy is not concentrated in the fiber core, there is a small amount of packet is transmitted through the layer close to the core, that is to say, if two fiber core is close enough, the mode transmitting in a fiber can enter another optical fiber and optical signals are re allocated in the two optical fibers.

So what’s the difference between PLC Fiber Splitter and Fused Fiber Splitter? It mainly focuses on the technical implementation: there are two types of optical splitter can realize light splitting: one is the traditional optical passive device which uses traditional fusion production technology , it called tapered coupler fiber splitter (Fused Fiber Splitter), another is planar optical waveguide splitter which uses optical integration technology, called PLC Splitter. The two devices have their own advantages, user can select in these two different types according to different occasion and demand, since now PLC splitter is more popular, Fiberall hereby do a brief introduction for fiber optic plc splitter.

Planar optical waveguide technology is making optical waveguide branching devices with semiconductor process, also known as PLC chip, and complete the split function on the chip, 1X32 or above channel can be achieved in a chip, add and couple input end and output end on the chip and makes it to be a package multi-channel fiber array.

The advantage of fiber optic PLC splitter is: (1) the loss is insensitive to the wavelength of the transmitted light and can meet the transmission requirements of different wavelengths. (2) With average optical ratio and the signal can be evenly distributed to the user. (3) With compact structure and small size, can be installed directly in the existing fiber distribution boxes, do not require special design with lot of space for installation. (4) There are a lot of channels in single fiber PLC splitter, which can reach more than 32 channels. (5) cost of multi-channel is low, the channel number is more, the cost advantage is more obvious. But the optical PLC splitter also has disadvantages: (1) the manufacturing process of the device is complex and the technical threshold is high. At present, the chip is monopolized by several foreign companies. (2) compared with the fused biconical splitter (FBT coupler), the cost is higher, especially in the low channel fiber optic splitter.
